Brisbane Cup
Looking for early info on this year’s Brisbane Cup? The experts at Neds have put together everything you need to know before this year’s race.
The time-honoured Brisbane Cup is a Group 2 race taking place at Eagle Farm Racecourse in June each year as part of the popular Stradbroke Handicap Day program. With an $400,000 prize purse, the staying showdown has been run over a variety of distances but as of 2021 is back up to the traditional two-mile cup distance of 3200m.
Good lead up races for this one include the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) as well as the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2400m).
First contested in 1866, the Brisbane Cup held Group 1 status from 1980 – 2006. In 2006 the distance and grade were decreased, but the event still draws plenty of top winter stayers.
Some of the most famous Brisbane Cup winners throughout history include Lough Neagh (1936), Hydrogen (1953), Tulloch (1961), that year’s subsequent Melbourne Cup champion Viewed (2008), and the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Knights Order (2021) who went on to win the next year’s Sydney Cup.
The 2021 Sydney Cup winner Selino meanwhile went on to win his first race since then with success in the 2023 Brisbane Cup results.
